We had dinner in our apartment last night, our last night before leaving Rome. We had plenty of leftovers and bought a few things to supplement. Hard to go wrong with pasta, bread, olive oil and mozzarella! Then we packed to prepare for our departure to Sorrento the next day.
The most memorable thing that happened today, though, was along different lines entirely. First, a bit of history. Almost two years ago, our home was burglarized. In addition to many other things that were stolen, Lane happened to not be wearing his wedding ring that day, and it was taken, which was very upsetting. Even more bizarrely, a few months later our house was broken into AGAIN, and I happened to be not wearing my wedding ring that day, and IT was stolen. (Needless to say, we got an alarm system installed at that point...) Anyway, we have been meaning to get new rings, but hadn't gotten around to it. I had the idea that it might be memorable to get new rings while we were in Italy. It just so happens that, right around the block from our apartment in Rome was a small (I mean SMALL) gioelleria (jewelry store) with one jeweler who makes all the jewelry. His name is Marco. I noticed a ring in the window that reminded me of our old wedding rings. Separately, Lane was walking by another time and noticed the same ring. When I mentioned it to him, we realized we both had the same idea. So, we went in to the shop that evening, around 8:30 and spoke to the jeweler. He makes all his jewelry by hand, "one-of-a-kind." The silver ring in the window fit Lane, and when we told him we wanted a matching set and were leaving Rome the next morning, he said he would take my ring measurement, go to his workshop, and make me a ring. We were to return at 11:30 that night to pick it up. It was kind of amazing. When we returned, he wasn't quite done, so we got to watch (and take pictures) of the last 5-10 minutes of the process. And now we have rings again! I know, you want pictures! Still no cable to connect my camera to the iPad, though, and internet has been notoriously difficult. We supposedly had internet at our apartment, but it worked for a total of about 2 hours during the 6 days we were there (and not at all for the past 3 days). Our current hotel in Sorrento has internet, but we can't actually seem to connect to it.
Speaking of Sorrento, we took taxi, fast train to Naples, local train to Sorrento, and taxi to our hotel to get here. It's so beautiful! But so far seems extremely touristy. Charming, and amazing views, but...
We had an incredible meal of what Lane and I both agreed was the best ravioli we have ever had. Mozzarella stuffed (amazing mozzarella, so creamy!) in a subtle pesto, four round ravioli with crispy strings of aubergine on top. Delicioso! The fresh fish on pane appetizer was pretty darn good as well.
Tomorrow, Pompeii.
